There’s A Lobster Loose!

For more than ten years, five would-be writers have somehow managed to discard infirmity, tragedy, parental and spousal responsibility, sucky jobs, suckier prospects, literary rejection and the basic planetary pull of life’s gravity to join one another in a unique collective of literary hooliganism that may not rival The Round Table, but certainly involves congregating around a table. Enter The Loose Lobster and this collection of essays, short stories, screenplay excerpts and other words which simply defy classification. Enjoy the read.

This collection of stories, essays and excerpts evoked such a range of emotion while reading that it's hard to know where to begin in reviewing it. I'll start by summing up: it's fantastic from start to finish! There really is something in here for everyone. I loved them all, but I was particularly

...gutted by Daniel Evans' "The Hammer in the Cupboard" and horrified with his story "Elmo's World".
...engrossed in both Rick Smith's novel excerpt of "The Blink" and his story "In Organ Cave, Where Tina Danced".
...sobered by Chuck Woodford's "The Window" and surprised by his story "Flipper Babies".
...hilariously enamored with George Evans' "The Romantic" and charmed by his story "Sift".
...sucked into Brian Kelly's "The Fourth Level" and intrigued by his screenplay for "(A) Divine Intervention".

As I mentioned, I loved everything in the collection, but these ten really stuck with me. There are so many of these stories that I wish I could see soon on the screen, whether big or small (in addition to screenplays listed above, other parts of this collection like "Botz" and "Lindsey Miracle" are a dream), or curl up with the full-length novel version of the excerpts. Until then, I'll have to be content with the fantastic teasers in this wonderful collection. You're sure to be, too!

Buy it! Read it! Borrow it from a friend! What a treat this little book is! You'll laugh, you'll cry...primarily because you're laughing. Great stories! Well done.
Amazing collection of diverse work from very talented writers. I spit a mouthful of Orange Crush reading Brian's summary of his first trip to Caaamp. Wondering if I'll have to wait another 10 years for the next book.....
Excellent book. Particularly enjoyed George Evans' description of writer's camp. Beautiful writing style and very well thought out. This is a great book!
Full disclosure One of the contributors to Lobster Tales is married to my cousin (although we have yet to meet face-to-face).

There are dozens of essays in this book -- I will mention three of them. If you like Steven King, you will love "Flipper Babies". Good luck sleeping at night after reading that one! "Bartley" is also King-esque, although not so frightening. And if you have the same twisted sense of humor that I do, you will love "Monkeys from Heaven", about the making of a ridiculous TV reality show, which if actually made would win great ratings! At least for a half-season or two. Maybe a reality show about making reality shows? I'd buy that for a dollar.
