Watercolors, pencils, fabric, embossing powders, wax, glue, a bleach pen...glossy photos, paper, canvas, wood, stencils, glass...stamps, laser copies, rub ons, absorbent ground...heat, pressure, plastic gift cards/hotel keys*, paint knives, various adhesives, mica color sprays...

And that's just a partial list of the fun equipment you will get to play with while putting your own twist on the techniques in Shimmer & Shine Workshop: Create Art that Sparkles - the latest creatively fun publication by the talented Christine Adolph. Who, just for the record, could easily be referred to as the Goddess of All that Shiny Stuff. (Which would probably be too long of a name to put on a driver's license, so I'm betting she'll just continue to go by Christine Adolph, at least legally - keeping her superb foiling talents under wraps. A semi secret from the general public, so she can continue grocery shopping, running other errands and living a "normal" life without being mobbed by throngs of her admirers.)

One of the best art books I've bought in quite awhile. I keep returning to this book for more ideas on adding the spark of foil to my art - and provide seemingly endless (awesome) ideas is exactly what Christine Adolph does in this 128 page book. There are so many cool ideas bursting forth from between these covers - if you are into creating art, many of the projects use common items you most likely already have. Some projects managed to catch me by surprise by using materials/mediums I wasn't real familiar with, but at the same time the book provided me with a "reason" (ok, some may say excuse, but I look at it as a positive haha) to add a few fun - and unfamiliar - supplies to my studio. Don't worry - there are plenty of techniques that use basic supplies, I just thought I would throw in the information you, too, will be able to find a couple of projects that will propel you to acquire some fun new substrates and materials. (Don't say I didn't warn you!) All you really need for an enjoyably memorable afternoon is this book, some transfer foil, a little creativity, and a laminating machine, or a tack iron. You'll be heating things up with the most amazing, glimmering, shimmering designs in no time!

I own hundreds of art books - some get a single glance, while others are dog-eared, highlighted, much loved editions that sport paint and a variety of other media on the cover and pages. I've returned to purchase a second copy - I'm tired of leaving my copy in my car or my studio, not having it to peruse/refer to/drool over/skim at night when I sketch and refill my "artistic tank".

Bottom Line: Run and grab this title! At this point, I consider this to be the Bible of Foiling, written by the breakthrough artist I have nicknamed Goddess of All That Shiny Stuff. Adolph crams all sorts of simple, but highly effective techniques in this fun-to-look-at book. One of the awesome tips she shares? Use a mouse pad under your tack iron when applying foil to your project - it's a fantastic (and small!) way to protect your work surface from the heat. She will also teach you how to get the most from your foil sheets, which can be somewhat pricey when you find it necessary to collect the whole range of colors. (So, yeah - I *may be* guilty of this - but Adolph didn't help my fate with her encouragement of this fun medium! She was my constant companion, cheering me on and providing gentle guidance throughout my foil explorations and adventures. The fact that I single-handedly supported the foil industry lately is totally Adolph's fault!) If you are looking for a few new skills to spice up your work, look no further. With the plethora of ideas presented (around 20!), I just hope Adolph reserved enough ideas to keep us busy when I beg her to come spend an afternoon in my studio!

* It's recommended you practice with used, empty, or expired gift/credit cards. Don't use the new gift card that your thoughtful aunt sent you for your birthday - which generously contains $100 to your favorite shop - and then go try to use the card at the store. The employees will *not* be impressed with your artistic pursuits. However, you *will* make an impression, I'm guessing. Yeah. "Guessing". ;)

Totally love this book! All of the ideas in this book are doable and have a WOW factor! I can't wait to try them all!
LOVE this book! Wonderfully inspiring and some great ideas and tips. Luscious!
This book is worth the price just for all of the tips on different media you can use to adhere transfer foil to projects. It is heavily weighted toward using transfer foil, but also includes projects using metallic paints and waxes, adhesive transfers with glitter, embossing powder, etc. If you are not interested in foiling, this book is probably not for you, but if you are, it is wonderful. It is beautifully photographed with lots of color pictures of the projects and a gallery for more inspiration.
